Some Comments About YSM + A Trick :)

I got serious with YSM almost 3 months ago, and in that time I’ve had some thoughts as to how they could improve, as well as some things I don’t like. Plus at the end, I have a nice little factoid that seems to have worked for me and others using YSM.

  • Their 50,000 limit is low initially for serious users. You get more keywords when you become a “Gold” member, but some people are serious from the get-go and will prove that, yet are stuck at the 50k limit. I called Yahoo the other day and told them that I’ve been spending over double what it takes to be a “Gold” member, and asked for a keyword raise. They said because of their new policies, they couldn’t.
  • The above point wouldn’t be as bad if Yahoo didn’t count declined and removed keywords towards your total. Say you submit 10,000 keywords, and 2,000 get removed. You still have 10k keywords under your account, not 8k. So there’s 2k useless keywords sitting there. Not cool.
  • The whole 50 keyword limit is just stupid, when you can do 10,000 off the bat at other places. Once again, this gets raised when you hit “Gold” status, but I called about this also and they wouldn’t make an exception.
  • Customer support is good, but I’ve had problems. Here’s a little story. Back when I first started with YSM, on my first day I charged more than I wanted to my account. So I called Yahoo and said “oops I charged too much, can you refund X amount to my credit card?” They said yeah sure we can do that, it’ll just take about 4 days to process. So I get an email saying the process has started and I’ll be refunded. My credit card bill comes with no refund to what I asked for. I spent the money anways so it’s not a big deal, I’m just advising you to make sure to watch things.
  • The lowest you can bid is $0.10/click. Most of us long-tailers could get high spots for cheaper than that, but we end up paying $0.10 for the #1 or 2 spot.
  • This is totally opinionated, but I just don’t like the whole prepay idea, I like how Google runs it more.

Alright enough of that, now for a little trick. I know when you try to add keywords, it says “You can only upload 50 at a time.” Well my advice is, try to add more anyways :). At first I was just adding 50 at a time and thinking “this is hell”, but I just tried slapping 500 in there, and bam it worked. Maybe they’re changing things, or maybe it’s always been that way and people haven’t known. But yeah it’s pretty cool, and doesn’t take me hours to load up thousands of keywords anymore.
